Grade A Clinical Negligence Solicitor

Location: Blackburn



We are looking for a Grade A specialist Senior Qualified Lawyer to join our team of committed and passionate professionals in our Clinical Negligence Department.  The successful candidate will engage in challenging and rewarding high value casework representing clients who are victims of clinical negligence.  This will provide a platform for you to showcase your exceptional client care and communication skills, sound judgment, confident decision making and significant legal knowledge and expertise.


The opportunity will suit a confident and compassionate Grade A Senior Qualified  Lawyer with a committed background of representing claimants and victims of clinical negligence, matched by a strong track record of running complex cases.  You will have a natural ability to provide legal services with a personal touch, demonstrating your care, understanding and sensitivity to clients who may have suffered negligence.


The successful candidate will run a high value multi track caseload which includes complex cases at the highest values, and will be able to deal with all aspects of running these cases from initial interview to trial. 

Principal Responsibilities:


  • To handle own mixed caseload of approximately 50 + cases (supervision and guidance will be provided where required).


  • To provide assistance and support to any area of the clinical negligence caseload/team as a whole when required.


  • To assist the Departmental Manager with the development of the Clinical Negligence Department including attending networking events, conferences and out of hours meetings.


  • To assist the Departmental Manager with the training and technical development of other members of the Clinical Negligence Department.


  • The successful candidate must also have a good financial awareness and be proactive in implementing maximum costs recoverability whilst providing an excellent client care service.


This will involve seeing the case through from start (including screening) to finish, including but not limited to:


  • Complying with all departmental processes and procedures;
  • Liaising with clients to obtain instructions and providing advice;
  • Investigating breach of duty and causation;
  • Obtaining relevant expert evidence and liaising with experts / third parties;
  • Advising clients on liability and quantum before negotiating with third parties / their representatives;
  • Conducting Court proceedings as appropriate;
  • Assisting in the department with discrete tasks such as researching points of law;
  • Drafting documents (such as schedules of special damages and Court documents) and research on quantum;
  • Arranging and attending conference with client’s and third parties;
  • Attendance at Court where deemed appropriate;
  • The successful candidate must be willing to proactively develop a niche specialism;
  • Practice development and networking events are a key aspect of the role.  As such enthusiasm for sharing knowledge and expertise to grow talent within the wider team is essential.  In addition to supporting the team you will also have excellent networking skills enabling you to nurture and develop relationships with clients and contributing towards business development.
  • You must be able to demonstrate experience of carrying out relevant investigations, preparing complex witness statements and attending conferences and court hearings (CCMCs and trials)


Requirements – Skills, Abilities, and Knowledge

  • Education and training: Solicitor / Chartered Legal Executive (Grade A);


  • Reading and communication: the ability to read extensively and cross reference with consistency is mandatory.  You must be able to read documents regardless of the volume and should be quick in deciphering information contained in documents. Ability to communicate effectively with usage of grammar and oratory;


  • Logical reasoning and persuasive skills: you must be able to talk people into believing in your argument. To do this, you need facts and evidences to support your argument, but most importantly you  must be able to present such facts in a logical and convincing manner;


  • Analytical and problem solving skills: you need to act as an advisor. So, you will have splendid analytical skills. You should be able to look at complex issues and offer legal solutions. In addition, you must be able to indicate the probable result of legal actions and proceedings.


  • Working additional hours outside of contracted hours may be required on occasion together with external meetings involving lengthy travel due to the sensitive requirements of vulnerable clients.


  • To work within business processes and procedures with an offensive and defensive tactical approach towards KPIs and targets.


In summary:


  • Sound working knowledge and experience of handling clinical negligence personal injury claims both as a stand alone fee earner and as part of a team;
  • Thorough knowledge and experience of Pre-Action Protocol for Clinical Negligence;
  • Previous experience of Multi-track work;
  • Previous experience of litigated matters, including multi track trial experience;
  • Ability to work as part of a close team in an open, supportive and collaborative manner;
  • Excellent organisational and administrative skills;
  • Excellent IT skills, including Word, Outlook and Proclaim;
  • Ability to be self supporting in typing and filing;
  • Ability to work on own initiative with minimum supervision.
